As Fraternity and Sorority Life staff, your student’s safety, well-being, and success at CMU are at the utmost importance. Greek life provides them with an environment to ensure professional and personal development. We hold our chapter members to high standards in regards to academic success, giving back to their community, leadership, engaging with other organizations on campus, and becoming active citizens.

In your student’s first semester in Greek life, they will complete anti-hazing and alcohol awareness modules online. This ensures that all members of our Greek community are educated on the topics and can promote self-accountability amongst their peers.

Central Michigan University holds a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to hazing. Any instances or concerns of hazing are taken very seriously. Chapters in question are put on immediate suspension throughout investigations held by Student Conduct. Below is a link (“filing Reports”) where students, staff, and the general public can submit reports concerning hazing, drug/alcohol abuse, as well as a sexual or gender-based misconduct.

In regards to alcohol use and education; events with alcohol are currently prohibited amidst the covid-19 pandemic. Once events with alcohol are permitted, our chapter Presidents, Social Chairs, and Risk Managers attend semesterly workshops on social/party expectations, alcohol awareness, and mandatory FSL policies. All events with alcohol are registered and approved by the FSL office, so staff is aware of them. All events are BYOB, chapters have guest lists, and are carding people at the door. Underage drinking is not condoned. Underage guests will receive a stamp at the door, guests 21+ will receive a wristband. All alcohol is checked in at the door and is kept in a monitored area. Members receive a punch card at the door to track their drinks. No more than 6 drinks can be brought by a guest (alv <15%). No glass containers, no liquor, no kegs, no open containers (i.e. punch bowl).

While sororities are great for building social connections and lasting friendships, your student will gain so much more. We evaluate all chapters on criteria covering academics, leadership development, chapter management, civic responsibility, health/wellness, and more in our Chapter Evaluation & Accreditation Program (CEAP). CEAP is linked below to give you an idea of what your student will be experiencing outside socializing.

Finally, we understand that the pandemic has added additional worry when it comes to your student attending a four-year university and considering joining a sorority. Our current Covid-19 guidelines are found under the previous page. Below, you will find a link to our full response plan from fall 2020.
