Sorority Life and Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic has further pushed the importance of community. Joining a sorority surrounds you with like-minded, empowered women and makes Central Michigan University’s campus feel a little smaller and close knit. The way we function as chapters has definitely changed, but the purpose of Greek life has not. As a part of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) on CMU’s campus, Panhellenic has implemented the following changes to ensure the safety of its chapter members, CMU, and Mount Pleasant community:

  • Events/socials with alcohol are strictly prohibited.

  • Philanthropy/social/sisterhood events all follow a 10 person guest limit indoors. Events over 10 people are permitted outdoors, at certain 3rd party venues, or if discussed with the university.

  • Masks are mandatory at all in-person events.

  • Any Covid cases within chapters are reported to FSL staff for contact tracing.

  • Additional practices for events have been implemented regarding contactless involvement and sanitizing.

Here are some ways our chapters have adapted the sorority experience this last year:

  • Virtual chapter, business, and Panhel meetings over Zoom

  • Offering virtual options for in-person events for anyone not comfortable attending in-person

  • Virtual sisterhoods (Netflix parties, game nights, etc.)

  • 1-on-1 or small group sisterhoods

  • Grab-n-Go events
